Separately, I have another theory. I changed the code in pre6 to explicitly force a garbage collection as soon as the model is loaded. This is because we are now consuming less memory, and I wanted to get confirmation. This is probably the source of *some* of the delay. Tim, if you are up to it, you can run another little test. JmolViewer.java lines 845 & 846 call System.gc() and System.finalize(). Comment out those lines and see what kinds of times you get.
