I just looked at the RasMol cartoon ... the last time I looked at it was
about a year ago.
It does not look particularly appealing to me ... I probably should have
taken a look at it before I sent out my previous message :-)
Pymol produces some nice cartoons. They are depth cued, smoothed, and shadowed. The cartoons come with specular highlights too. I took a snap shot of the diplay. http://www.wsc.ma.edu/cmasi/pymol_cartoon.jpg
The only down side to all the pretty graphics is that big molecules do not rotate smoothly for me or, presumably, any user with a somewhat dated system.
I am using data/1crn.pdb
Q: Do you like the fact that turn/random coil is square?
Q: Do you like the helices as 'boxy' ribbons?
I do like the sheets.
for example, I like your idea of showing directionality in the helix cartoon.
Yes, I see that adding an arrowhead to the helix cartoon would be helpful.
Any comments/suggestions/words of encouragement?
If you try to make the cartoons pretty, also include a way to turn of some of the pretty effects, so dated systems can at least see the cartoons.
