Gonzalo, I understand that you are having performance problems on your Macintosh machines.
Based upon your description, I believe that most of your issues are not specifically related to Jmol. Rather, they are related to your machine configurations (CPU speed & memory) and the fact that Java is quite 'heavy' and requires a lot of resources to get initialized. >> What kind of machine are you working on? Operating System, memory, and >> CPU speed? > > I have tried jmol in a iMac G3 500 Mz with OS X 10.3. Yes, I believe that a 500Mhz G3 running OSX 10.3 is slow. > IT works nearly fine with Explorer and Mozillas, but not with Safari. The problem is that with Explorer & Mozilla on Mac OSX you cannot use JavaScript to send scripts to the JmolApplet. > The same occurs when I use a iBook G4 900 Mz. > The difference is that the G4 seems to load quicker. I would expect performance to be fine on this machine. > I also have tried with Netscape 4.8 in MacOS 9.2 (in a iMac G3 500) but > it takes even more time to load. Do you mean to load the html page with the applet or to load a molecule? >> Yes. I need to know what you think is slow. > > The load of the page and the figure is very slow. Once loaded, it is > quite rapid OK. There is nothing I can do about that. That is simply the time that Java is taking to start up. How much memory do you have on your machine? Can you hear the hard disk (or see the light flashing) while the page is loading?. If so, then you need more memory. OSX requires quite a bit more memory than OS9. And starting up Java is expensive. > It is also frequent that some buttons do not work. It is like some code > has been lost during loading and they do not work. This is an > aleatorious effect I am not familiar with this. >> On what kind of hardware and at what screen resolution. > > The iMac has a CRT 15" screen with 1024 x 768, million colours. The > same for the iBook but with 14" LCD screen. OK Actually, I asked the question incorrectly. What I should have asked was the size of the Jmol window. That affects performance linearly. If the window has twice as many pixels then it takes twice as long to render. And if the window is twice as wide and twice as high then it has 4 times as many pixels. So Jmol window size is a very important factor. > If I can help you in any other case (even in testing your new release) > let me know (do not hesitate) Gracias, Miguel ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.Net email is sponsored by: GNOME Foundation Hackers Unite!
