As always, things are not simple. I suspect what has happened is that this
OS X user (at level  10.3.7) actually has BOTH Java 1.3 and  1.4 on his
system, but some browsers use  1.3 by default (Firefox) and some 1.4 (Safari).
One can persuade  Firefox to use  1.4 by using eg 
http://sourceforge.net/projects/javaplugin/
but most default users will not have installed this.

so I suspect his behaviour is due to using FireFox without the javaplugin 
installed.

I presume however, that this particular issue can be solved by including 
gnujaxp.jar on the
server page.
