G'day,

Apologies for not making it clearer - I was asking for an additional way
of
performing measurements to be added to both the Jmol applet and
application.

Brian's comments echo my users' experience; it was primarily new users who
have difficulty coming to grips with the UI for making measurements.

I think the method I proposed will be easier for new users while
experienced users will probably use the existing double-click method.

What does the Jmol-Users community think?

I am also interested in what others think ... particularly because I think that going to a 'measurement user-interface mode' is not a good idea. I made it available from the scripting language only for backwards compatibility with existing scripts. But I am not enthusiastic about extending support for it into the interactive UI.

But Chris, I know that you are not the only person that wants it ...

I like
set picking distance
... especially the console feedback and would argue to add this console feedback to double ... double picking mode, too. May be, adding transient (as in RasMol) graphic measurement output on single click picking after
set picking distance
by default, would make it more intuitive for the applet people without console,
alternatively set picking monitor could be made the default
set picking distance
set picking monitor
(so, I think what Chris wanted is implemented, but not visible for the user in hurry)

Q: Chris, how did you propose that we get into this mode ... and out of it?

on by
set picking [distance|angle|torsion]

off by any set picking but [distance|angle|torsion|monitor]
