I think that we should continue to support 1.1 JVMs at least through mid-2006. I do not think that we should fork the code. In general, I do not have any problems introducing features that only function when Swing is available. No, it has not been discussed very much. There are not too many users who understand the issues and are capable of discussing it. Finally, let me say that I personally would rather *not* put my time into GUI-related enhancements ... so that leaves a big opportunity for other developers to contribute to Jmol.
