Thanks to all, especially to Miguel, for the suggestions. It turned out that I had been using just the JmolApplet.jar - as in my non-scripted site - rather than the group of jar files in more recent versions of the applet, which are needed for the scripting (at least) to work.

My fault, but it would be good if the page <http://jmol.sourceforge.net/jslibrary/> could be amended to make this clear (and brought up to date in some other respects).
