This is not a complaint, but an observation. Perhaps someone knows more about it? Quite possibly it is a browser/java issue, not a Jmol one.

This comes up because when you use FirstGlance in Jmol in Internet Explorer, it typically starts in a less-than-fullscreen window. You are tempted to maximize the window while waiting for the applet to arrive. You must then reload/refresh in order to resize the applet to fit the larger window. I have warned users to wait until they see the molecule before resizing the window.

If you click the browser's reload/refresh button on a Jmol page early during applet loading, exactly when Jmol shows a blank black rectangle, Jmol proceeds to its seconds-counting display, but stalls, never displaying the molecule (counts as long as you wait). Reloading after the counting starts did not cause a stall in limited tests.

I have observed this mostly with FirstGlance in Jmol (bioinformatics.org/firstglance with Jmol 10.00.42) but also at jmol.sourceforge.net/demo/cartoons (less reproducibly, with Jmol 10.00.43).

I see it 100% in Windows XP SP2 with Netscape 7 or 8 or Internet Explorer, and often but not always with Firefox and Mozilla.

I see it some of the time with slightly different symptoms in Safari on Mac OSX 10.3.9. It doesn't always happen, but when it does, Jmol may stall with a black rectangle at the "Executing script" stage, or a second Jmol window in the same browser session (jmol.sourceforge.net main page) may count to >300 seconds without displaying the script.

Occasionally this premature reloading may crash the browser so that it disappears abruptly and unceremoniously (seen with Netscape 8 and Safari).

Thanks for any insights, -Eric
