This was done for RasMol compatibility ... and compatibility with existing
scripts.

I also wondered about introduce 'auto' as a keyword.

Q: Are you suggesting that "auto" apply to specified subsets of atoms? If
so, then that change would be too radical for us to consider at this
point.

For compatibility reasons, I don't feel comfortable changing the behavior of

  connect
  connect on
  connect off
