It certainly looks that way, but unfortunately, I can reproduce this with Sun's Java 1.5.0_15-b04 too... Ubuntu 8.04 allows you to install it on a Windows system, *without* any partitioning etc... by making some sort of virtual disk or so. Have not tried it... I typically create dual boot systems...
