We've not had a problem thus far (have been using this approach since 
2005 with Jmol 10 and Java Plug-in v1.4.2 on IE5.5 & 6).

Testing with Jmol 11.6 hasn't resulted in any crashes so far, just the 
slower initialization.  Has been tested on various platforms IE 6 & 7, 
FF3, Win2K, Vista, Ubuntu, JRE1.4.2 & 6.0).  Will keep an eye on it.
