I believe this is simply due to the fact that MSIE doesn't recognize the .xhtml extension. My recollection is that .xhtml pages work if you use the .html extension and the proper xhtml header information. That said, I also recall that MSIE displays the pages formatted differently than the other browsers. Anyway, try changing the extension before putting the page on a server.
These are the reasons why I didn't use .xhtml pages in the export to web function.
