I guess this is because the "label" command has only a restricted set 
of values: either "off" or a custom label or a formatted label. But 
there is no parameter to set the label position... Oh, yes there is 
indeed: "set labeloffset"  So maybe the manually moved position can 
be stored.

Do you mean that the manually shifted position is recovered, or that 
it is not?
