Jmol 11.8.14 and 11.9.19_dev do not seem to distinguish case when selecting
chain names. For example, in 3hf9,

select :A

gives the same result as does

select :a

In contrast, the identification reports (hover, click -> status and script
console) distinguish chain A from chain a.

3hf9 uses both the full upper and lower case alphabets, plus some numbers.

There are 22 entries in the PDB with 37 or more chains. Generally, with up to
36 chains, the chains are named 0-9 and A-Z without using lower case letters.
When the number of chains exceeds 36, lower case letters are used. There is
only one entry with 62 chains (0-9, A-Z, a-z) and no entries with more than 62.

In the 1990's, some entries used punctuation symbols for some chiains. It
appears to me that these have been renamed with subsequent remediations, and
perhaps any entries with more than 62 chains have been split into multiple
files (just speculation).
