Labeling -- my experience is that label positioning for final copy is a real
pain, and no "smart" program is going to do it well. Most publishers will
prefer to put their own labels in anyway no matter what you do.

Nonetheless, the following is SUPPOSED to work well:

set picking labels

and then use SHIFT-LEFT to drag labels around. Unfortunately there is a bug
there in 11.9.32 which I just corrected, so I can't convince you probably
that it's useful.

As for ORTEP drawings, frankly, that's what ORTEP is for. If you like it,
use it.

Jmol can do a fair imitation.

Black and white images for publication can be produced using

set greyscaleRendering TRUE

If you like the ORTEP-like ellipsoids you can use

set ellipsoidBall TRUE
set ellipsoidAxes TRUE

If you like white atoms with black bonds, you can use:

background white
color atoms white
color bonds blue #black here produces an odd effect, probably a bug

So that's pretty much the look (see attached).

If nature does not answer first what we want,
it is better to take what answer we get.
