As far as I know, atomIndex has always (and should in future) start 
at zero due to technical reasons. atomNo starts at one.

Yup!   it seems that I reported wrongly 
Forget my former post. Everything works as expected logically.
Size and length give the number of atoms, while max givex the index 
of the last one. Deleting atoms acts correctly on these values.
