Bob,

I think I see what this is. Drag to bond appears to be a default even 
when a click replace atom is selected. That's really a good default to 
have. The unintended delete of a hydrogen appears to be a result of the 
mouse jitter initiating a drag to bond on H - i.e. unintended and 
incorrect attempt to extend a chain on an H. The result is a delete of 
the H.
