I see this logical. If I go into mouse selection I am not expecting to work against an already selected full set. So the previous "select none" makes sense for me. SelectionHalos on is just a helper for the process. You cannot go into that mode from the popup menu, or can you? Ah, set picking .... :) Possibly the other buttons are just canceling what the selection button does, and so the halos are gone.
