There was another viewer that used the wireframe swap - I don't remember which
viewer. At the time, most people I talked to did not like this. It really
doesn't bother me, but there might be more general opposition to the wireframe
swap as default. On the other hand, the surface swap seems completely innocuous
to me, but who knows.

If both options can be set in the load script, I plan to use both for iPad.
Having said this, I think the surface swap is a good general default.
