I don't know about JOnAS in a stand-alone use (so I won't reply to the
group) but the EnhydraEnterprise platform embeds JOnAS and allows you to
write a "service" that gets deployed, auto-started,managed via JMX, all that
good stuff.
This is in late alpha-early beta now (primarily because the deployment tools
don't exist yet) but it's coming along very very quickly; we should have the
new architecture drop ready within a week... this will include JOnAS 2.2.4
and a sample showing use from a servlet, *and* it (probably) has a
standalone service (an NNTP server) running as well.
I say "probably" because we're going so fast towards this drop we might not
hold up for migrating the NNTP service forward from the Alpha 4 drop. (We
had a different, more complicated, service scheme in alpha 4).
Anyway, I think we're now building what you would want. Check out the
architecture (top-level description at
http://www.enhydra.org/software/enhydraEnterprise/index.html, detail service
architecture guide (version 0.6, so not complete) at
http://www.enhydra.org/project/workingGroups/Architecture/services-arch-guid
e-06.pdf; let me know what you think! (I'm interested in what sorts of
components/services folks might like to build, want to make sure I've got
the right support in there.)
