The VM shouldn't intrisnically have a problem - 1.3 version VMs have been
reported being efficient at >1GB image size. Certainly the large object size
might be a problem in finding an allocatable space that size on the heap, so
there might be a lot of compacting invoked on each object creation (and so
the app would run quite slowly) but as long as there's sufficient OS virtual
memory under the VM I wouldn't predict a problem with the JVM itself. It
would be important to have a large enough max heap setting, of course...
I ran a test and allocated 10M arrays in object chunks, and my default JVM
under NetBeans 3.2 went OOME at the 7th one I tried to add. So I added
another button to my UI to delete teh zeroth BLOB in my Vector, and I added
and deleted them randomly for about 5 miutes. No sweta. (until I tried to
delete more than I had created. Oops.)
So my quick experiemtn says the BLOB size in and of itself is OK; but he has
to set the underlying JVM heap to be as big as he intended to keep in-memory
at once, or else JOnAS has to watch freemem size before allocating instances
(throw some System exception to say "no" in the would-overrun case.)
