My father, a Quaker & Army medic who refused to carry
a weapon during his service in WWII, was on a troop
transport headed for the planned landing invasion of
Japan. The CO openly told the members of his company
that casualties from the first wave were expected at
100% KIA. Prayers & goodbyes were said.

The next day, it was learned that President Truman had
authorized the use of, and delivered 2 Atomic weapons
over Hiroshima & Nagasaki.

The Japanese surrendered ... my father's troop
transport turned around and headed back to San
Fransisco harbor.

So I must salute the pilot of Enola Gay. Otherwise, I
would not be here to post this.
