Tonight several tornadoes cut through the Washington, DC area. The campus
of the University of Maryland, College Park, where Joni played in the
Joni-Dylan tour, was especially hard hit. Tragically, two people died in a
car on the campus.
I suppose it's a sign of the times that, when the emergency radio
broadcasting system broke in on the NPR program I was listening to as the
storms approached, I said to myself Gee, I hope it's just the weather.
Tornadoes of this stripe are rare in this area. It seems remarkable that
there were not more fatalities. Property damage was extensive, but it
could have been much, much worse.
