Interesting that you say this.  Fraser Smith (the teacher in question) was
one of the best teachers I ever had.  Considered very "alternative" at the
time - he wore toe sandals, jeans and had long hair and a beard (shock,
horror)!  He was also best friends with NZ's most well-known contemporary
poet - Sam Hunt, a personal favourite of mine.  He really cared about his
students, and made learning a lot of fun.  One of those rare teachers (as
discussed here recently) for whom teaching was a true vocation.  I would put
my own mother in that category too - far and away the best teacher I ever
had, for three years of high school!

Smart in this case is not smart-intelligent, but smart-cheeky, or
smart-alecky!  Cheerful I'm not sure about, I guess that goes along with the
comment about being too chatty, I was always getting told off for talking
when I should have been listening!
