I try not to bore everyone with Gage stories but ... I do anyway. today we went to see Monsters. Inc. - not as good as we had hoped. The exciting thing was seeing previews for next May's new Star Wars and the biggest thrill was seeing the previews for Harry Potter, and we loved what we saw of Harry Potter! Two weeks from today I will buy tickets at 8 a.m. so we can be sure to get in that evening.
We stopped at the new Meijers (local version of WalMart, this is the one they built across the street from me in the former woods, where I taught Gage to sing, they paved paradise and they put up parking lot...) and we are walking through the store and he did not want a toy (!!!!!!!) but he wants to look at books (!!!!!!!!!!!!) and he picks up "Are you my mother?" and basically, with only a little help, reads the whole thing! This kid did not read a week ago! Then he read "Green Eggs and Ham" and then he read "One fish, two fish..." and we kind of read our way through maybe 15 books in the Meijers aisle. So we got ice cream (always, Superman flavor, but them, today he was the super reader!) and bought "Are you my mother?" and came home and read some more, picking out books from the book box that I had had for him for a while waiting for this day! All the discussion of children's books was fun, but to be with a child when the child starts reading - wow, what a kick! The smile on his face as he read page after page and he knew he was thrilling me with every page... he is so pleased with himself, and I am so in awe of seeing someone for whom the thrill of reading has only just begun - this is a new bookaholic in the making!
