Catherine McKay wote: <I once tried reading that darn Proust thing and I got so sick of that madeleine that I just couldn't go on. I know Proust was supposed to be a great writer, but I just couldn't handle it - enough of the damn cookie! ...>
Catherine, I too once tried Proust (Swann's Way, I think, if I've got the right author ... I've tried to purge it from my memory!) Half the sentences just went on and on for pages until you had no idea what the beginning of the sentence had been about. I once happened upon a tv show that showed some original manuscripts of Proust's. Seems he'd begin with a regular page, but then paste on his additions with various strips of paper along the margins folded in increasingly bizarre and ever more complicated formations. I was laughing because it looked just like it came out on the printed page! To my mind, completely unintelligible. Lindsay Moon
