to the extent that my high school french teacher used proust for sentence
analysis. nothing could beat those loooooong sentences comprising every
conceivable kind of subordinate clause. some sentences were 12 lines long.
those teachers of yore were absolutely obsessed with sentence structure. i
wonder if kids do so much sentence analysis nowadays. when i was growing up,
teachers were in the middle of a transition from structural grammar to
whatever came next. so they changed the names of everything [predicatives
became complements, etc.] at least twice before i finished high school.
i was very good at sentence structure in french but terrible in spanish. go
figure.
