Please check out this web site for the Tears
concert/CD project. I had the great honour of
attending this concert and it continues to amaze me
how something so complex was pulled together in such a
short span of time, one month.
The concert began with us all standing up to sing The
Star Spangled Banner which was overwhelming in
itself...I have never seen this happen before...the
American National anthem sung at a Canadian folk
venue..it was so special and I thought my heart would
burst wide open with pride and sorrow all at once. The
concert ended with a hair-standing-on-end version of
Blowing in the Wind which poured into the Mary Ellen
Carter, another wonderful Stan song.
It was my absolute privilege to meet and speak with
Ariel Rogers who was married to our very own Stan
Rogers, Canadian icon/folk singer/man of passion
...Stan was a gentle giant, story teller
extraordinaire speaking from the heart and soul of
every day life...Stan was a big fan of Joni Mitchell .
Meeting Ariel was an incredible moment for me, as
special and precious as so many of the Joni moments
which others on the list have shared. And only a few
days later, at the Garnet Rogers concert Friday night,
Brian and I met her again. Ariel is down to earth; and
she graciously shared her warmth and stories and
laughter with us.
Ariel is an incredible, special person who was one of
the many driving forces behind this project. On the CD
is an unreleased Stan tune entitled Jamie (written by
Mark Rust, recorded live by Howard Evans at the
Bermuda Folk Club 1978) which Ariel, her son David and
her husband Scott Cameron Smith performed. Brought us
all to tears. Spooky how the lyrics speak to the
situation of today.
When I spoke with Scott Cameron Smith, a performer and
one of the producers, he asked me to pass along to my
honey that this project was for him and for all of
the Americans, for everyone affected by the waves of
September 11th. It was such a touching, overwhelming
evening. I have never in my life seen Canadians come
together in this way to support our neighbours south
of the border. I get all weepy just remembering this
night of magic and hope. My words can never do this
night justice and I am sure that we have all cried
Tears of a Thousand Years over this terrible tragedy.
thanks for the bandwidth. This was too incredible to
keep to myself.
and thank you again to my Brei. for everything.
always and always,
Mags.

And this loving is a drawing close,
a tuning in, an opening.
Until one perfect moment;
but how can it be expressed?
A receiving, an enfolding
as I cradle you in my arms.
Within my heart, within my soul,
You are my true love.
