I'm a big fan of Jackson Browne as well as Joni, but I don't really think
their piano styles are alike, although I like his very much. There is a kind
of melancholy mood in Joni's playing that is reflective, a little
other-wordly, whereas, in my opinion, Jackson Browne's piano is more
down-to-earth. Joni's music also sounds to me like she is constantly
changing keys alot, but Browne is pretty much in one key at a time per song,
with minor modulations. One artist I think sounds a bit like Joni in his
piano playing is Marc Cohn. I'm curious if he is a fan of hers or not,
because I think I hear a similarity there on some of the tracks from his
three albums. It always bugged me a bit, though, when he mentions W.C. Handy
in "Walking in Memphis", because it makes me think of Joni's line, "W.C.
Handy, I'm rich and I'm...." from "Old Furry Sings the Blues." Did he
mention W.C. Handy because he got the idea from her? I wonder.
