Excuse the empty npost...short term memory loss!!!!!
Actually trying to type from work on a web-based (read weird) connection.
For the 60's , besides Wood stock, watch Monterey Pop...the first and in Eric Burdon's
words "the only REAL festival". Janis' performance was from the Sat nigth show, the
Sat afternoon show (all San Francisco
groups) was not filmed since these groups were suspicious of the LA promoter type
mentality. My two visual memories of Monterey Pop are Janis, John Cippolina , and
Mickey Dolenz. I can still remember seeing John Cippolina of Quicksilver from across
the seating area and falling in love with his hair (it was even longer than mine).
My real up-close memory of Janis was while I was in high scholl and had a press pass.
I menaged to get into the dressing room just before Big Brother went on stage. The
room was about 6 by 10 ft, filled with the band and other hangers on and me (a shy and
naive high school junior) Janis offered me her bottle of Southern Comfort, but I was
too awed by Sam Andrews (another of my crushes on a long haired guitarist) to do
anything but gaze at him.
Mack, where do you live in Texas? I lived 35 miles south of Abilene in Ovalo, Texas
and worked in Abilene (my description of that town is "100 miles from anywhere you'd
want to be in Texas". But the radio station there was not THAT bad. Is Kenny Mann
still there (another long haired blond hunk).
Let me also recommend the Summer of Love by Joel Selvin, books by Jerry Rubin "do it",
Abby Hoffman "Steal this book", Eric Burdon's
books, Grace Slick's auto biography ( try this one on tape, she reads it herself).
As for the LA scene in the 60's and 70's, I still have fond memories of the place and
time (maybe because I didn't smoke pot).
The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl, the Stones at the Bowl, the Stones at the Forum,
the Kinks at the Palladium, the Yardbirds at the Hullabaloo (later named the
Aquarius), Steve Miller at the Whiskey (and havinga drink with him at the bar that
night, partying at the Sunset Hyatt with a convention of FM DJs after the Cream
Farewell concert, Led Zepplin at the Rose Bowl Auditorium (hi, Steve),Pink Floyd at
UCLA with that HUGE gong (for free)....
Good times to remember on a night working at the library in Haight Ashbury.
