Just have to disagree here and say that although there are obviously tensions
between the countries, I think this is a bit extreme.
The political stance between the countries is far from good, which goes
without saying, but what you are saying here is about the English people,
which is a completely different matter.
If we are going to generalise, then the popularity of Irish acts in the UK
charts, Irish TV presenters, and Irish people winning and coming second in the
two Big Brothers, would suggest that the British/English public are actually
quite keen on the Irish.
Apart from anything else, most 'English' people have plenty of Irish, Scottish
and Welsh in their bloods.
Although I'm sure there are individual English people who hate the Irish, I
guess I'm really disagreeing with your earlier comment that 'we were all
brought up to think that ('the Irish are pigs')'. I really don't understand
that, but I guess we just had very different upbringings.
