Hmmm, Joni may have been ONE of the first, certainly not THE first.  Laura 
Nyro (one of a very small number of her contemporaries whom Joni has lavishly 
praised, and rightly so) was doing that on her second album, Eli & The 13th 
Confession, in 1967.  There was true genius.  Rest In Peace, Laura.
