"600,000 doctors [that's a lot of docs!)] are putting on rubber gloves and they're poking at the miseries made of love. They say they're learning how to spot the battered wives, among all the women bleeding through their lives." It puts me in mind of an autopsy, or a coroner's inquest. It seems like every time a woman dies as a result of spousal abuse, everyone tries to figure out what happened, how was it allowed to get that far and so on. There have certainly been some horrendous cases in the last few years in my part of the world of husbands/lovers stalking their wives, ex-wives, girlfriends, whatever, and murdering them, sometimes not just them, but their kids or their parents or anyone close to the woman. And when you read about it later, and they're looking back on it, you often find out there was a history of abuse, and the guy had been stalking her for quite a while - and no one did anything about it, or if they did, it wasn't enough - injunctions don't work in this kind of extreme case. So there's an inquest or an investigation of some kind and everybody asks, why, why, why? and they try to fit it into some pattern, with the aim of making sure it doesn't happen again. But it does. So they keep on poking around at the miseries made of love, but they're not getting very far - they're just "learning" how to spot the battered wives.
