one reason is that when people are challenged on some positon, they cannot handle it and they lash out with personal attacks. Of course they have lost the argument as soon as they do that. However, it still is very unpleasant and is the cause of the distress people feel. Disagreeing with ideas is not the same as name calling, telling somene they are stupid or bad. Unfortaunately, it seems many are unable to separate ideas from feelings and thus when an idea they hold is challeneged, they freak and come out fighting dirty. such a shame.
