thanks darice....very interesting information as this this sparked a memory for me...i remember meeting a woman out here on the west coast who grew up in the same town as my grandparents on the east coast (my grandfather was german & his grandfather i think was the one who emigrated) who told me that my grandparents were quite ostricized at that time, as was anyone else who was german in that area...my grandmother, a southern belle (of english background who also never mentioned the fact that she was also irish...grr!) never mentioned this because i imagine it was quite painful...
