This brings something to mind that my maternal grandmother told me. That entire side of the family migrated to the Ottawa area from Germany. She told me that when she was a little girl during WWI they would get spit on as they walked down the street. She never forgot it. I guess they also had private elementary schools because they were taught in German. She said that quickly changed.
