This brings something to mind that my maternal grandmother told me.  That
entire side of the family migrated to the Ottawa area from Germany.  She
told me that when she was a little girl during WWI they would get spit on as
they walked down the street.  She never forgot it.
I guess they also had private elementary schools because they were taught in
German.  She said that quickly changed.

thanks darice....very interesting information as this this sparked a memory
for me...i remember meeting a woman out here on the west coast who grew up
in the same town as my grandparents on the east coast (my grandfather was
german & his grandfather i think was the one who emigrated) who told me that
my grandparents were quite ostricized at that time, as was anyone else who
was german in that area...my grandmother, a southern belle (of english
background who also never mentioned the fact that she was also irish...grr!)
never mentioned this because i imagine it was quite painful...
