For a long time I believed that Joni had written A Case of You about James. Hmm. I kinda thought it might be about the elusive Leonard Cohen, who shared time with Joni in Greece, among other things. Her Wizard of Id is a mirror to his Suzanne. His words pour out like holy wine ; the map of Canada, etc. It may also be not about any one guy in particular. But I hear a very deep hurt there. I have to say, this is my all-time favorite Joni song, and every once in a while, when done with great heart, and in a new way, this song has a way of catching me off guard, and the tears just roll down. No other song does that to me. (Thank you, Bryan Thomas) This said, James could certainly be her Blue boy... But frankly, I hope I never really know. I like (and respect) the mystery.
