The insurgents in South Viet Nam were called the Viet Cong, which got shortened to "VC". The military uses a phonetic alphabet and "VC" is "Victor Charlie", which got shortened to "Charlie", which came to mean the enemy. During the Cold War the Russians were "Ivan" (don't know exactly why) and during WW2 the Japanese were called "Tojo". Not sure what they called the Germans other than "Krauts". Today we have all sorts of names for Arabs/Moslems which need not be mentioned here. dave.
