I think it is a good thing as well but I have to caution - there are plenty of 
independent 
labels which engage in the same practices.  So going to an independent does not 
automatically equal fairness.

But I think it is a good thing because it puts artist expectations in-line with 
reality - 
instead of expecting to sell 2 million records, they accept that there audience is 
actually 15,000.  

(BTW - Nonesuch is NOT an independent.)

I've got no problems with Joni speaking out - however, like Debra, I'd like to see her 
act out as well.  She is well respected and could lend a lot of legitimacy to various 
artist rights campaigns and organizations.  She could also attract more artists to the 
cause.  Hell, even something as simple as giving a seminar to explain to artists why 
they should keep their publishing or do an admin deal instead of a co-publishing one.  
With all the activity that is being initiated and pushed by artists themselves as 
opposed to their managers or unions, it is an exciting time and I find it remarkably 
that she is absent from the scene.
