I think you may be referring to thing thing they do to the gums. I had braces when I was a teen, and they wanted to cut open the gums and slice something inside, otherwise when the braces are taken off, the teeth can move back to where they were somewhat. Slicing these things in the gums stops them moving back. Needless to say, I got shit scared and didn't have it done. A friend of mine bought some - it's quite expensive for the small bit you get.
