I'd bet that they (she?) meant the Newport Folk Festival. Ironically,
beginning in the mid-70's, the JAZZ festival would have been a more
appropriate venue, but at some point, they stopped calling it the "Newport"
jazz festival, in favor of KOOL, and later other corporate sponsors (JVC
comes to mind). This reminds me of the typo in several photo captions in
the "Joni Mitchell Companion", where it's referred to as the "Newport FALLS
Festival".
