I also suggested something along these lines a few months ago. Les created
a PC list, but it seems that even though a number of people signed up, this
did not confine political posts to that list, possibly because some people
don't want to feel like they are being isolated off on another list. That's
why I feel the PC designation could be a bit more user friendly. I really
feel for those who do not want to read people hashing out the political/war
threads here, even though I am as guilty as anyone of becoming involved in
them. That's why I would like to see a solution for those who want to stay
engaged. I vascillate greatly between agreeing they don't belong here and
then other times liking the insight and background that a wide variety of
people can bring to the discussion. There may be a strong number who want
to keep them, but on the other hand, there is also a strong number who
really are put off by them and that sentiment goes way back before the
events of the past year or so. I think we have to respect those people's
feelings - to keep ignoring those who are tired of them and sick of hitting
the delete key is not being sensitive to the wishes of others in the greater
community here. I hate to think people are feeling forced over to JC only
primarily because of the political threads on the NJC list. I also think
that if a separate designation were added, I would hope that those who
choose to engage will do so in the spirit of open-mindedness and friendship
and respect. Or if some discussions turn more heated, to take it as
sometimes coming with the territory.
