So true, David. Plus Joni's couplet is so much stronger because she describes herself 
as being both surf AND sand, her constant theme of freedom vs. attachment, as opposed 
to:

You are the ___________,
I am the ____________(opposite)

Her writing is typically so cliche-free, I think that's why lines like "one big boo 
hoo" & "nice kitty kitty" rubbed so many the wrong way, especially when it's laid 
alongside of a brilliant snippet like "every disc a poker chip, every song a one-night 
stand".

I like your idea of comparative writing, by the way. I'll have to do a little research 
& see if I can find some other good examples.
