I'm so sorry to hear about your son-in-law.  My father suffered from
depression most of his life - he had extensive shock therapy when I was
about five, which my mother says completely altered his personality.  She
often says she wished I'd known him before the treatments.  His depression
also contributed to the mis-diagnosis of the bacterial infection that killed
him - the doctors thought his irrational behaviour was due to his mental
condition, not the infection racing around his brain and body.

Depression is certainly a real disease, and needs to be recognised as such.

My deepest sympathies to you, and your family.
