i don't have the hdcd decoder thingy but fwiw i updated all the updateable
jonis to hdcd. the most dramatic difference can be heard on song to a
seagull and c&s. as to the rest, i guess you do need the hdcd chip. the
volume is a lot higher on the hdcd's, though, so you seem to get more
definition or at least more kick. one advantage of the hdcd's is that you
get the original cover art, so in a way many post-vinyl folks can get as
glimpse of how magnificent joni's covers were.
