yeah, rick, that's a great one! didn't that
appear in one of her songbooks? is my memory
failing or wasn't there one of the two of them
sitting on some straight back chairs inside a
house, jamming together?
the reason I mention "some memories for me" is
because that particular songbook was really the
start of some pretty heady days for me... after
the last time I saw Joni... in Detroit... yeah,
in '68... STAS came out and I'm sure that, like
me, for those who were around and heard her live
prior to that, it was extremely satisfying to say
the least... (of course, in those days the only
place you could hear it was on 'underground' FM
radio) but for me this songbook brought on
another whole new dimension... that ol' 'degrees
of separation' thing...
see, being her 'hosts' when she rambled into
town to play, naturally we (the Cellar gang)
tried to be there for whatever she wanted to
do... of course she had to eat... so we dined
her... she played a little pool... so did I... maybe a book store... a music store for
strings... but the thing is, mostly what she
wanted to do was play. a few hours of small talk
and sight seeing and she'd start to get a bit
antsy... and, sure enough she had that D28
nestled in her lap and was twistin' those keys.
...and for me, being the 'house performer'...
ie: the most avid player around all the time, by
default I became her 'sparring' partner, so to
speak... spending many hours trying out stuff and
jamming... for instance, she'd teach me a tuning
and show me how she wanted to hear it picked, and
then I'd lay down the rhythm guitar while she
danced all over the neck trying things she heard
in her head...
at any rate, around the time I bumped into this
songbook, I'd really gone through some changes...
from folk to rock and blues... from living in the
back of the coffeehouse to the commune... from
dressing and looking like Gordon Lighfoot to
dressing and looking a lot more like David Crosby
or Jim Morrison. in other words I'd moved on to
the music of Cream and Hendrix and Joplin and
people like CSNY and eventually JT were fast
favorites and I was drawn to try to learn some of
their jams...
that was my first JT songbook and there, when I
opened it, was a pic of the two of them
together... pretty sure I remember one of them
both with guitars jamming cause I remember
thinking 'wow, it wasn't that long ago she was
jamming with me just like that!' wow...
then eventually I came across that one of her
sitting in the grass playing for Eric Clapton
with Dave Crosby... then there was the one with
Stills... the one with Nash... the one with
Crosby... and on and on... after a while I got
used to it but at the time I first saw that book
was when it first hit me...
cheers,
 pat

several (well, at least more than one... you know
how wishful thinking can color an old timer's
memory) really nice shots of Joni in it. is this
the same songbook? (hint, hint) are you sending
any more scans? (hint) thanks for this one... it
really does bring back some memories for me... :o) >>
