<<Let's also hope for more Joni in the New Year - either the tribute album,
or
the long-awaited/desired Xmas album from Siquomb herself.>>
I hope we get some new Joni in 2001, Hell, but it'd be a surprise. After
all, 2000 brought us a new studio release, a tour, an exhibition of her
paintings...I imagine she'll be keeping a low profile in 2001, UNLESS her
strategy is to knock off a record a year to fulfill her contract with
Reprise and then retire. My preference would be to see her switch over to a
label like Righteous Babe where she could have even more freedom with her
musical projects.
As far as Tributes go, the JMDL put out FIFTEEN CD's worth of tribute in
2000!! Way to go gang! No way we'll be able to top that in '01! Not to
mention the TNT Tribute CD, not to mention The Howling Wolf show which I AM
STILL PATIENTLY WAITING ON!!! ;~) Also, the "I Came Upon A Child of God" CD
which has shipped to me but I haven't gotten it yet.
As for the Christmas album, I for one hope it DOESN'T happen (at least not
at the expense of something else). After all, she's got "River" and
"Facelift" and that's about it. "Gift of The Magi" would be great to hear,
but there's no way she's going to 'resurrect' a song she never recorded in
the first place. The line "Christmas is sparkling out on Carol's lawn"
doesn't make "Chinese Cafe" a Christmas song. So what would we get? I doubt
that she would record songs of a highly sacred nature, and please God NOT
the Hallelujah chorus! ;~)
So that leaves the secular ones like "The Christmas Song" (Chestnuts
Roasting, etc.), Let It Snow, Winter Wonderland, Jingle Bell Rock...Maybe
she could dig up some classier ones like "Lo, How a Rose ere Blooming" or
something. She could do "The Little Drummer Boy" with Brian Blade, but then
it wouldn't be very PC to refer to him as a Drummer BOY, would it? ;~)
Plus, Christmas albums are so typical, and Joni is so atypical. I would
only hope that if and when she does release it, I don't have to pay $50 for
the Special Collector's Edition in a Currier & Ives tin with a painting of
Joni and Santa touching tongues! Caption, 'I saw Joni kissing Santa
Claus'...:~)
Anyway, when it's all said and done, it'll be hard to top 2000 as far as
Joni goes!!
