I am sure that "Free Man..." was written for Geffen. Others on the list
more Joni-knowledgable than I will be able to give all kinds of
citations for that.
But I am mentally enjoying the image of Jacques Brel and Joni doing
something musically together. I saw "Jacques Brel is alive and living
in Paris" many more years ago than I care to remember, in Chicago at Mr.
Kelly's (for you Chicagoans out there old enough to remember Mr.
Kelly's...).
You are lucky, Tyler, that a friend has my "Jacques Brel is alive..."
book in storage at his house. Usually anytime someone mentions Brel I
whip the book out and quote some French lyrics (I know NO French...),
usually the song 'Next' for some reason, or 'If You Go Away...' which is
a beautiful song except the English version (by Rod McKeun?) was so
emotionally over wrought it is almost a parody.
Anyway, you got spared the Brel quotes this time, but you may not be so
lucky next time!
