How about this? People, usually women, were burned at
the stake for being "witches". These so-called
witches were often wise women or healers - they had a
power or an insight that many people didn't have (thus
prophets), but because they didn't fit into the usual
norm, or because someone else was jealous of them,
they would be cast into the role of "witch" or heretic
and burned. So maybe if you're "polite" and you act
the way others expect you to act, you won't be burned
(literally or figuratively.) Somehow I don't think
I'm expressing this very well, so hope you understand
what I mean.
