So does Brittany Spears - but that doesn't make it quality music. Neither
Spears nor Enya will ever create an evolving maturing body of music with a
fascinating variety of tempo complexities, elevated chordal textures,
involving melody lines, and intelligent meaningful topical lyrics, written
and played by an inspired and talented artist, joined by a broad spectrum of
brilliant musicians - a body of work, the worth and pertinence of which
increases year by year - a body of work that, when taken as a whole, is
praised by the creator's peers for it's permanence and global impact on the
creative medium known as music, and which group of peers, made up of highly
respected individuals from widely diverse musical backgrounds, celebrate the
timeless influence of this work on their chosen artform - a body of work
like, say, well, like JONI's!!
I realize Enya is BIG with the 'aroma therapy & crystals' crowd - but really,
how many times can she rewrite the 'same tired song' and ever be considered a
serious contributing artist?! It's like pretending that Kenny G (who also
has a 'huge' following) is a 'real' jazz musician.
I fully realize that this is my humble and wholly subjective opinion, but I
was surprised that even a mention of Enya would surface on a list of people
who have recognized, and pay tribute to, an artist as magnificent as Joni.
Enya is not even in the same universe as Joni, much less in the same league.
Again, I realize this is one man's view - but I just don't understand how
someone who has had their soul touched by Ms. Mitchell, could even listen to
Enya's airy, soulless, substance-less, 'ball-less', drivel - much less 'like'
it!?? But hey - who am I to say anything negative about the 'queen of new
age'.
Now, as all of you Enya fans out there circle for the kill - remember - I
recognize your individual worth as a person, embrace you as a beloved fellow
human being, and hope all of you reach self-actualization -- I just think
Enya SUCKS!!! :-)
